Hi, I'm Julie. My own personal struggle with emotional eating began when I was 8 years old, way back before emotional eating was something people talked about. All I knew was that food took the bad feelings away. Brownies made me less scared, less lonely. Pizza gave me something to look forward to at the end of a bad day. Food gave me everything and it gave me nothing. When the food was gone, the feelings I was trying to avoid were still there. I hated how I felt, and I didn’t know how to soothe, nurture, or encourage myself. I only knew how to beat myself up for not reaching my goals or for being vulnerable and getting hurt. Deep down, I didn’t feel worthy of my own love. I had a hard time accepting that I could love myself simply because I existed, even when I failed, even if I did nothing. When I was angry or sad, it felt impossible to sit with my feelings and just let them exist. I would be mad at myself for being mad. I'd berate myself for feeling sad. I felt a deep sense of shame and blamed myself for not being able to control my emotions.
I didn’t know where to go in my mind with these painful feelings, how validate them, how to release them, what to do with them. I just felt trapped. That horrible trapped feeling is what led me to discover Emotional Freedom Technique. I began my journey to attempt to love and accept myself as is, before I reached any goal or accomplished anything, the way you love a baby just because it's born and it exists. We all deserve that love. We're all worthy of that love. I used to hate it when someone would tell me to "enjoy the journey" because I just wanted to get "there" and be "done." But the truth is, there is no "there" there, and we're never "done.” I realized I want to be here, now, in every moment, accepting and loving what is and continuing to do that in every moment as it happens. And that is my wish for you, to accept and love yourself as you are, in this moment, just being you.
