“In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.” – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Biochemist and Nobel Prize Winner.
Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is also known as "tapping." EFT is practiced by tapping with your fingertips on specific acupoints along the meridians in your body, which function like an energetic distribution network. These meridians transport energy throughout the body and are the channels through which that energy flows. Emotional trauma can cause stagnation in our energy pathways, and our overall existence is affected by this energy flow. How we think, feel, and move can be greatly affected by blockages in our energy network, and disease is believed to be a blockage in the energy flow of these channels. The goal of EFT is to restore health and balance to the body’s energy by removing blockages. Science has measured the electromagnetic frequencies in our bodies for years with advanced machines like EKG’s and MRI's, and numerous studies demonstrate these energy pathways and points conduct electricity. Healing traditions like acupuncture, acupressure, massage and yoga are founded on the principle of the existence of energy meridians. Combining acupoint stimulation with elements of cognitive restructuring, exposure techniques, and neuro-linguistic programming is what makes EFT effective.
When you practice EFT, you verbally acknowledge the problem you're experiencing while accepting yourself as you tap on the meridian endpoints. For example, if you frequently eat beyond fullness and it's uncomfortable, you would acknowledge that in your setup statement by saying, "Even though I frequently eat beyond fullness and make myself uncomfortable, I still completely love, accept, and forgive myself." By using psychological reversal in this way, we are correcting for any resistance your subconscious mind might have to you accepting yourself as you are. This acceptance opens the path to healing because it provides us with a starting point that is aligned with your personal experience. When you’re struggling with difficult feelings, tapping through those emotions while stating them out loud can encourage a sense of safety and resolution. Tapping sends a calming signal to the amygdala, which is the part of our brain that plays a primary role in how we perceive and process emotions.
Before and after tapping, we'll use a SUD scale (Subjective Units of Distress scale) to rate things like the level of your cravings, your desire to eat when you're not hungry, and your emotional distress. For example, you might be craving chocolate and rate your craving at a 10 on a scale from 1 to 10. After a couple of rounds of tapping, we'll check your craving and have you rate it again on the SUD scale to see how much your craving has decreased. Because your rating and experience with tapping are all subjective, you'll be able to feel for yourself if EFT is working for you. Instead of using willpower to stop eating your craving foods, you'll be able to have some and feel satisfied with less. Once we get rid of the emotional charge, the food won't have the same power over you and you won't feel as drawn to it. I will keep notes on all of our sessions so you can look back and see how much progress you've made. You might start by rating your craving for chocolate at a 10 and then suddenly find yourself going days without even thinking about it!
The first step is to schedule an introductory session. In that session, we will get an idea of how well we work together and what our next steps should be from there.
If you're new to Emotional Freedom Technique, I can help you get comfortable with the process. EFT is an evidence-based self-help therapeutic method that combines elements of exposure and cognitive therapy with somatic stimulation of acupressure points on the face and body. Because EFT is a self-help method, I will encourage you to practice EFT on your own in between our sessions. As an EFT coach, I can support you in finding your direction and staying motivated and on-task as you move past resistance to arrive at your long term goals.
In addition to your hour-long coaching sessions with me, you will need to set aside a minimum of 15 minutes every day to tap on homework assignments I'll provide you based on your individual emotional issues.
